This monument was sculpted by J.C. Esser, a prominent Syracuse artist. He used his daughter Katherine for the model of the angel. It is interesting to see how "Katherine" has changed over the years. Until coming across the original photo, I did not know that she was ever an angel. If you look closely at the lower right picture on the middle of her upper back there are two whiter flat areas. That is the only indication that there was ever anything different about her previous appearance, with the exception of her head of course. In the original picture she faces the front of the monument toward the east. In the picture from 1999, she had been moved off of her pedestal and left facing the west (Rt. 81). In the early 2000's she was replaced but left facing the wrong direction.
